At a cemetery, lives are commemorated, deaths are recorded, families are reunited, memories are made tangible, and love is undisguised. Testimonies of devotion, pride and remembrance are carved in stone to pay warm tribute to accomplishments and to the life - not death - of a loved one.

The cemetery is homeland for family memorial that are a sustaining source of comfort to the living.

A cemetery is a history of people; a perpetual record of yesterday, and a sanctuary of peace and quiet today.

A cemetery exists because every life is worth remembering - always.

History

Emily Cemetery Board - early 1900s
Group at Emily Cemetery - early 1900s

The Emily Presbyterian Cemetery was founded in 1852 by a group of public minded citizens who believed that a suitable burial ground should be available for the needs of their close-knit community. The cemetery is located in the City of Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, Canada on the southwest corner of 133 – Emily Park road 10 (formerly Victoria County Road 10) and Meadowview Road (formerly 2nd Line of Emily).

In 1853 a church was built on the southeast corner of the lot for a cost of $258.50. In 1880 the church was moved to the Village of Mount Pleasant. By 1910 the Cemetery was in a sad state of repair. A committee was set up to make it a fitting place for community pioneers. In 1924 a wrought-iron fence was built around the grounds and a fountain installed.

Stone pillars were erected at the entrance to the Cemetery in July of 1977. New concrete steps up from Emily Park Road 10 were completed in May 1984 and the fountain was rebuilt in August of 1986. A storage shed with washrooms was built in the summer of 1990.

Our millennium project was a new roadway built to the south of the old section to meet with the entrance road near the stone pillars.

In 2020 a 32 niche Columbarium was constructed on the Cemetery property. Future plans include landscaping that will also accommodate additional Columbaria as required.

All donations received by the Emily Presbyterian Cemetery Board are used solely for the upkeep and improvement of the cemetery.

The administration body consist of the Chairperson and an appointed board of directors. The Chairperson and directors offer their time and services without remuneration to maintain and improve the cemetery.

A Decoration Day service is held annually toward the end of the summer.
